Why Nature Has a Soothing Effect on Our Stressed-Out Brains

Let’s get one thing out of the way: the forest doesn’t judge you. Trees don’t care if you forgot to return a text. Rivers don’t mind if you’re having a tough week. And mountains? Well, they’ve been around long enough to know we’re all just figuring it out.
As a counselor who spends more time outside than in a therapy room, I’ve seen firsthand how nature works its magic on people, especially those dealing with stress, anxiety, and the general chaos of life. But it’s not just a vibe. There’s real science behind it.
Nature is basically a stress sponge
Research shows that even just 20 minutes in nature can lower your cortisol levels—that’s the hormone your body pumps out when you're feeling overwhelmed or under pressure. You know that heavy, jittery, can't-sit-still feeling? That’s cortisol’s greatest hit. Nature helps turn the volume down.
A study out of Japan found that people who practiced “forest bathing” (yes, that’s a thing—it’s called shinrin-yoku) had lower heart rates and blood pressure after just one session. No treadmill required. Just slow walking, deep breathing, and soaking in the sounds and smells of the outdoors.
Green space = brain space
Turns out, the brain loves greenery. A study from Stanford showed that walking in nature reduced rumination—you know, that endless mental replay of things you wish you’d said differently or moments that made you cringe at 3 am. Nature helps quiet that internal noise.
Another fun fact: kids with ADHD show fewer symptoms when they spend time outside. So if it helps hyper little humans focus, imagine what it can do for your adult-sized brain.
But here’s the best part...
You don’t need to hike the Himalayas to get these benefits. A walk around Kal Lake, sitting under a tree in your backyard, even just stepping away from your phone and listening to birds for five minutes—it all counts.
At Backcountry Wellness, we bring therapy into the fresh air for a reason. Because when your nervous system calms down, you can actually get somewhere in a session. You stop spiraling and start processing. You breathe deeper. You feel human again.
So if life’s been a bit much lately…
Come join me outside. No fluorescent lights, no small talk in waiting rooms—just you, me, and the quiet kind of healing only nature can offer.
